What makes a great sports year? Do we define a sports year when the unthinkable becomes reality? When we say goodbye to greatness? Do we define the world of sports with the motto “anything could happen”? As we turn the page on 2016 in to 2017, the contributors of Back Sports Page look back at the year that was 2016 with their highlights and memories. Today we start with the NFL:

Looking to the Final Home Game of the Season!!

    Author Randy Zellea

    Looking Back Against the Cowboys:

The fans of the Giants understood why Jerry Reese put as much attention in the defenses during the offseason as he did. The defense forced three turnovers and held the Cowboys to seven points. Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo was happy with the team’s effort: “What we did well, tremendous effort by the defense all night. We stayed in the moment the entire 60 minutes of the ball game. I really thought we put our foot down in the second half of the game. We tackled fundamentally sound. We held the offense to seven points, minimized explosive gains and forced turnovers. What we need to work on, we need to keep them under 100 yards rushing and keep them out of field goal range at the end of the first half.”

What to Watch for this Super Bowl Sunday

As millions of fans from around the world tune into the biggest television event in sports this year, many will be focused on the quarterback matchup between Peyton Manning and Cam Newton. Manning is the seasoned veteran among the pair; he is the NFL all time leader in passing touchdown and yards. He’s won 5 AP NFL Most Valuable Player awards, been selected to 7 1st All Pro teams, and has of course his lone Super Bowl victory against the Chicago Bears in 2007. On the other side is probable NFL MVP Cam Newton; the popular leader of an up and coming Panthers team that nearly went undefeated this past season.

The QB matchup will also feature 2 number one overall picks- Peyton was the Colts’ selection in 1998 and Cam by Carolina in the 2011 draft (which if you haven’t read up on yet, you should- it includes JJ Watt, Patrick Peterson, Julio Jones, AJ Green, etc). You’ll hear a lot about these two gentlemen in the next few days, namely if this indeed is Peyton’s “last rodeo” and if Super Cam is the new face of the NFL. Just remember- these guys play on TEAMS, and there are some great matchups to watch for this week other than the one between the guys under center.

The Red headed quarterback has started 77 games since being drafted by the Cincinnati Bengals in the second round 35th overall. He has been one of the most durable players since entering the league but that all changed this past Sunday while making a tackle on an interception Dalton broke his thumb and a once promising season took a turn for the worse.
