What makes a great sports year? Do we define a sports year when the unthinkable becomes reality? When we say goodbye to greatness? Do we define the world of sports with the motto “anything could happen”? As we turn the page on 2016 in to 2017, the contributors of Back Sports Page look back at the year that was 2016 with their highlights and memories. Today we start with the NFL:

Big Blue Report: Taming the Lions

Looking to the Final Home Game of the Season!!

    Author Randy Zellea

    Looking Back Against the Cowboys:

The fans of the Giants understood why Jerry Reese put as much attention in the defenses during the offseason as he did. The defense forced three turnovers and held the Cowboys to seven points. Giants Head Coach Ben McAdoo was happy with the team’s effort: “What we did well, tremendous effort by the defense all night. We stayed in the moment the entire 60 minutes of the ball game. I really thought we put our foot down in the second half of the game. We tackled fundamentally sound. We held the offense to seven points, minimized explosive gains and forced turnovers. What we need to work on, we need to keep them under 100 yards rushing and keep them out of field goal range at the end of the first half.”

Do We Still Have to Question How Good Eli Manning Is?

Let’s forget that it was against the 1-4 San Francisco 49ers. Eli Manning has spent 11 seasons hearing that he is not his brother. He spent 11 seasons listening that he was not as good as Rodgers, Brady, Brees, Big Ben, Flacco or whoever the flavor of the week is.

We Aren't Family

Every professional sport has its own atmosphere. Through chants, songs, costumes, and even organized “color-outs,” the passion for a sport and its teams is born. In 1979, the Pittsburgh Pirates adopted the Sister Sledge favorite, “We Are Family” as a theme during their pennant race and eventual 5th championship. Well, being a father in this new sports era, I feel that there isn’t much of a family experience in the NFL; I’m not alone.

Through the Fog, the New York Giants Will Emerge

Many storylines surround New York Giants camp this year. After last season’s 7-9 disappointment, owner John Mara decided it was time to change up his philosophy. In a matter of weeks, the Giants retooled their squad with younger, more explosive weapons. Traditionally meticulous in the free agency market, Big Blue handed out over $100 million in new contracts this offseason.

Last year, the Giants began the season losing their first six games, and finished with their first losing season since 2004. The campaign was accentuated with injuries, a weak running game, rickety offensive and defensive lines, and poor playmaking. The Giants running game fell to 29th in the league, while Eli Manning threw a career-worst 27 interceptions.
