A GLIMPSE OF DWIGHT HOWARD OFF THE COURT
Watching Dwight Howard on the basketball court provides basketball fans with everything they could ever want: hustle, intensity, overwhelming power and moves worthy of a SportsCenter highlight reel. Since Howard entered the league out of high school in 2004, he has been dominating the paint. His impressive resume includes averaging a double-double, winning an Olympic gold medal, being selected as an All-Star five times and being voted NBA Defensive Player of the Year an unprecedented three seasons in a row (2009-2011).
When we think of Western Conference NBA basketball our mind is drawn to high scores and a fast-paced style of play. That is the style former NBA All-Star Tom Chambers was built for. Chambers grew up as a promising 6-foot-2-inch guard out of Colorado. Then, in between sophomore and junior year of high school, Chambers grew seven inches. All of the sudden, he had the ability to play the game as a guard, with good handling and shooting skills, but at the size of most NBA power forwards. It was a unique combination that led him to a productive career at the University of Utah and later to the NBA.

According to NCAA statistics, approximately 3.1% of senior boys playing high school basketball will play in college. Of those select few, 1.2% will go on to be drafted by the NBA. That’s about 1 in every 75 collegiate senior players. Lanny Smith was on track to be that 1 player. Yet three years after his senior year, the NBA is still a dream.
